Excerpt

It was the gap of unnatural quiet that made Terry look up from her phone, her thumb hovering over the ‘send’ button. She stayed crouched in the candy aisle, a bag of chocolate-covered gummi bears in one hand, her phone in the other. Maude’s text was waiting for a reply.
RU???!!!
Terry slowly lowered the bag of candy to the tiled floor. Every crinkle of the plastic sounded like cracks of thunder. She paused and listened again. There was only the hum of the fluorescent lights of the convenience store. Terry carefully stood and craned her neck around the aisle. Her heart pulsed adrenaline as she peeked around a towering display of two-liter pop bottles.
The young clerk behind the cash register stood like a statue, pale-faced with his mouth hanging open, staring into the face of a man in a ski mask. A pistol was pointed at the clerk’s nose.
“All of it,” the voice behind the mask demanded, motioning to the open satchel on the counter.
Here we go again, Terry thought. She took in a calculated breath, glancing around the area. The pop bottles were no use. Then a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. There, at the end of the opposite aisle, displayed with garbage bags and tubes of crazy glue, was the answer.
Slipping the phone into the back pocket of her denim shorts, she dashed, staying ducked down and keeping out of sight. It only took seconds to reach what she needed. And then, moving so quickly that neither the clerk nor the gunman turned her way, Terry struck the first blow.

Katie Hamstead’s bestselling trilogy is getting a new look! Check out the new covers below!

Hope of the Pharoah (KIYA Trilogy #1)

by Katie Hamstead

Summary:

When Naomi’s sisters are snatched up to be taken to be wives of the erratic Pharaoh, Akhenaten, she knows they won’t survive the palace, so she offers herself in their place. The fearsome Commander Horemheb sees her courage, and knows she is exactly what he is looking for…

The Great Queen Nefertiti despises Naomi instantly, and strips her of her Hebrew lineage, including her name, which is changed to Kiya. Kiya allies herself with Horemheb, who pushes her to greatness and encourages her to make the Pharaoh fall in love with her. When Akhenaten declares Kiya will be the mother of his heir, Nefertiti, furious with jealousy, schemes to destroy Kiya.

Kiya must play the deadly game carefully. She is in a silent battle of wills, and a struggle for who will one day inherit the crown. If she does bear an heir, she knows she will need to fight to protect him, as well as herself, from Nefertiti who is out for blood.

Mother of a King (KIYA Trilogy #2)
by Katie Hamstead

Summary:

Nefertiti has forced Naomi to flee Amarna with Malachi and the three children. But even under the protection of Naomi’s family in Thebes, Nefertiti still hunts her and Tut. Nefertiti sends assassins to kill them, and while Naomi fights to protect the children, Malachi fights to keep her safe.

With three children in tow, one of which isn’t her own, she is labeled the harlot outcast wife of the pharaoh and is shunned. She isn’t safe among her own people, and flees from being stoned to death. Although her family protects her, she must find a way to survive.

While Naomi struggles to keep herself and Tut alive, old adversaries return as Smenkhkare takes advantage of Akhenaten’s ailing health. Naomi must rely on Horemheb’s promise to protect Tut’s birthright, but her feelings for Malachi could cause more problems with Horemheb than she expects.

Rise of a New Dynasty (KIYA Trilogy #3)
by Katie Hamstead

Summary:

Tut has grown into his position as Pharaoh, but he is a wild young man. Naomi fears for him, not only because of his recklessness, but because he has put his trust in Ay—the man determined to destroy Naomi—despite her and Horemheb advising against it.

Meanwhile, death and slavery hang over Naomi and her family. With fear of the booming Hebrew numbers causing talk of enslaving them, conscription is reinstated and Naomi fears for the lives of her other children. Especially since Ay’s children are now adults, and just as dangerous as their father. They threaten to take Itani, conspire against Tut, and push for power.

But Tut is in trouble. While Ay’s daughter draws Horemheb’s attention, and Naomi deals with the struggles of her family, everyone’s distraction could spell death for the young Pharaoh.

***Character Interview With Ash***

Hey, everyone. It’s Ashelyn Drake, and I have a special guest with me. I’ll be interviewing Asher Davidson from my novel Perfect For You.

Ashelyn: Welcome, Ash!

Ash: Hey, Ashelyn. Our names are kind of similar. Was that intentional?

Ashelyn: No, it wasn’t. You came to me named, remember? Wait, I think I’m supposed to be asking the questions.

Ash: Right. Sorry about that.

Ashelyn: No problem. So tell me about your relationship with Meg.

Ash: Meg is amazing. We’ve been together for five months, and I’m dying to tell her how I feel. You know…tell her I love her.

Ashelyn: So why haven’t you?

Ash: Why don’t girls get how hard it is for the guy to be the first one to say it? What if Meg doesn’t say it back?

Ashelyn: Do you really think she won’t?

Ash: *shrugs* No, I’m pretty sure she feels the same way about me.

Ashelyn: How do you feel about Noah’s sudden appearance in Meg’s life?

Ash: *clenches jaw* I don’t get why Coach Moyers had to ask Noah to help Meg improve her game. She’s already the second best player on the tennis team. She doesn’t need his help.

Ashelyn: Do you really feel that way or do you just not want Noah hanging out with Meg?

Ash: They’re not hanging out. He’s coaching her.

Ashelyn: Ash…

Ash: Fine! I hate that he’s helping her. Yes, I want her to have a good season, but Noah’s a creep. He uses girls.

Ashelyn: But Meg is with you, so how would he use her?

Ash: I didn’t mean it like that. He’ll try something with her though. I know it.

Ashelyn: Do you not trust Meg to stop him?

Ash: I don’t trust Noah. He’s used to getting what he wants. Guys like him always do.

Ashelyn: That’s pretty much what he told me.

Ash: You talked to him? What did he say about Meg?

Ashelyn: Sorry, Ash, but we’re out of time. Thanks for answering my questions.

Find out more about Ash, Meg, and Noah in Perfect For You.

When Madison meets fellow student Rhys Crewe, sparks fly, throwing her plans for wild fling with Professor Evans completely out of whack—as do her unexpectedly complicated feelings for Thomas. With tales of Arthur and Lancelot haunting her every waking moment, Madison has to make the most difficult choice of her life.

***Character Profile***

Name:  Tabby Nolan

Age: 18

Personality:  She’s pragmatic, determined, loyal, giving, self conscious, feels inadequate, but manages to hide her self-doubts. She’d sacrifice everything for those she loves, but wouldn’t expect the same in return.

Tabby’s most important truth: Sometimes second best is all there is, and it will have to do.

Likes:  Sailing—she likes the feel of the water beneath her… it’s calming in its unpredictable nature. She likes the empty beach at nightfall—the breeze through the trees, the sand between her toes. Solitude brings her peace. She also loves her sister and would do anything for her. She wouldn’t turn down dark chocolate if someone offered it to her.

Dislikes: She dislikes feeling like a failure and really hates feeling like she’s let anyone down. She dislikes feeling trapped—both physically and emotionally and dealing with people who refuse to look at both sides of a situation. She allows herself to be motivated by guilt, and she hates that about herself.

by Christina Mercer
Release Date: 05/31/14

Summary from Goodreads:

Love is honey sweet, but it comes with a fatal sting . . .

Melaina Maris needs wings to fly the gap between loving Sam and her family’s ancient curse that forces carnal love and then kills the male lovers. But there’s no easy way out, especially after the curse turns her into the Honey Queen—savior to honey bees—intensifying her charms.

To help her fulfill the curse’s demands in the least harmful way, her grandmother takes her to mate with terminally ill Boyd. But Boyd’s gay. And an expert in mythology. Instead of having sex, Melaina learns how she might summon the goddess who created the first ancestor bee-charmer and cursed her bloodline. Melaina’s magic—tears to save honey bees from endangerment—could be enough to persuade the goddess to end the curse. But an unexpected discovery soon changes that hope, spinning Melaina into a swarm of love, friendship and death.

***Author Interview with Christina Mercer***

Where did the idea come for this book?

After several years of writing fantasy for teens and also beekeeping, I began to think about a way to merge the two. When first tossing ideas around with my youngest son, he came up with a title for the book and it stuck through the entire process. I had tons of fun writing a YA fiction that encompassed my love of fantasy, mythology, and honey bees.

What genre does your book fall under?

Young Adult Fantasy (mostly). Some have labeled it YA Urban Fantasy (though it’s set in rural Northern California), and others have called it YA Paranormal Romance. I refer to it as YA Fantasy with romantic elements.

How did you choose the name of your protagonist?

MELAINA MARIS contains “Mel” which is Latin for honey (I also use it in the character, Melisse—her first human ancestor and original Honey Queen). Maris means “of the sea”, which fits with her family’s oceanic-goddess ties.

Who pulls your heroine’s heartstrings?

SAM is her childhood friend who she falls in love with and does everything in her power to avoid.

Which actors would you use to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Abigail Breslin with long/wavy lighter hair as MELAINA (protagonist)

Tim Riggins as SAM (love interest)

Thomas Dekker as BOYD (terminally-ill friend)

Ian Somerhalder as TY (dangerously enticing obstacle)

Julie Christie as GRAN (mentor/guardian)

Pinterest Board for Honey Queen Character Look-A-Likes: http://www.pinterest.com/christinamercer/honey-queen-character-look-a-likes/

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Melaina Maris needs wings to fly the gap between loving Sam and her family’s ancient curse that forces carnal love and then kills the male lovers.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Almost exactly one year from start to finish, including running it through my critique group.

What about this book might pique a reader’s interest?

I believe this story is entirely unique, so for readers of YA fiction seeking a fresh look at fantasy/magic/Greek-“ish” mythology with romance spun through, this should appeal to them (especially those also having an interest in honey bees!). Another intriguing element is Melaina’s friendship with terminally-ill (and gay) friend, Boyd, who is both her greatest support and an emotional obstacle. The story weaves together a variety of personal relationships, grief, love, lust, and courage, as well as human-nature interplay, and yet it remains an easy/fast read.

Gypsy (The Cavy Files #1)
by Trisha Leigh
Release Date: 05/13/14
378 pages

Summary from Goodreads:

Inconsequential: not important or significant.

Synonyms: insignificant, unimportant, nonessential, irrelevant

In the world of genetic mutation, Gypsy’s talent of knowing a person’s age of death is considered a failure. Her peers, the other Cavies, have powers that range from curdling a blood still in the vein to being able to overhear a conversation taking place three miles away, but when they’re taken from the sanctuary where they grew up and forced into the real world, Gypsy, with her all-but-invisible gift, is the one with the advantage.

The only one who’s safe, if the world finds out what they can do.

When the Cavies are attacked and inoculated with an unidentified virus, that illusion is shattered. Whatever was attached to the virus causes their abilities to change. Grow. In some cases, to escape their control.

Gypsy dreamed of normal high school, normal friends, a normal life, for years. Instead, the Cavies are sucked under a sea of government intrigue, weaponized genetic mutation, and crushing secrets that will reframe everything they’ve ever been told about how their “talents” came to be in the first place.

When they find out one of their own has been appropriated by the government, mistreated and forced to run dangerous missions, their desire for information becomes a pressing need. With only a series of guesses about their origins, the path to the truth becomes quickly littered with friends, enemies, and in the end, the Cavies ability to trust anyone at all.

***Excerpt***

“Nah. Do you believe in fate?”

“Like, one true loves? Not really.” I’d never thought much about it, honestly. The future of a Cavy isn’t a concrete thing; it’s not a given. Haint, who’d been born with the kind of suspicion the rest of us had to work at, thought maybe the Philosopher and his staff would get rid of us one day, either by accident with their tests, or on purpose when we became a liability. Or they’d decide to sell us. The useful ones, at least.

“Not just with romance. I believe in all kinds. Like, people who are supposed to meet will meet, and it’s all predetermined whether they’ll be enemies, or hardly notice each other, if they’ll be friends. Whether friendships last until they die or just long enough to accomplish something specific.”

“Hmm.” It’s hard to keep up, but her patter is interesting. Maya’s not boring, that’s for sure. “And which kind are we?”

“Friends, definitely. Too soon to say how long it’ll last, I suppose. Que sera sera and all— Hey, what the hell?” Maya nearly slams into a man, older than the two of us by at least ten years, maybe more.

He smells like urine and sweat, like someone who hasn’t seen the inside of a shower in more than a few days. His black hair sticks out from his head in tufts and his skin is a few shades too dark for winter—like a patchy, permanent tan. Maya and I recoil in tandem, falling over each other in our scramble to move away, to turn the corner, to escape. It’s pure luck I don’t wind up seeing her number, too. The alley we turn down is barren, nothing but crunchy brown leaves tripping across the asphalt and into the grass.

“Are you Norah Jane Crespo?”

The sound of my name, rasped in an unfamiliar, demanding voice, halts my progress. Despite Maya’s hissed protest I stop, looking at the man following us. Maybe I know him, or my father sent him to check on me or something, because literally no one knows my whole name except my dad, the school, and the cops.

My pause, my squint, is all the confirmation he needs. All the time he needs, too.

A needle glints in his left hand as it slices down, jabbing me in the base of my neck.

I shriek when it plunges into my flesh, more from the surprise than the pain, although the needle isn’t small. Being injected isn’t weird for me, but it’s been a long time since anyone did it without warning.

Through the haze of shock, I see Maya swing her backpack at my assailant, but he’s not sticking around to get clobbered. He’s halfway down the alley before she gets out her first curse word, and when he disappears she squats next to me, reaching out a hand.

I recoil, keeping my fingers pressed on the affected area, and she drops her arm.

“My heavenly days, are you okay?” She pants, her face pale white with bright-red dots on the apples of her cheeks, making her look more like a doll than ever. “Who was that guy?”

“I have no idea.” My legs shake, my heart pounds, and bitter bile coats the back of my tongue. Every throb in my chest pushes the contents of the needle, unknown and foreboding, deeper into my bloodstream.

“Sweet fancy Moses I’m gonna pass out.” Despite her words, Maya’s bright eyes snap with intelligence as she recovers from the shock and starts to analyze. “He knew your name. What was that all about?”

“I don’t know.” I don’t—never seen him before in my life—but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that this kind of thing doesn’t happen to your normal, average, everyday high school junior. It has to have something to do with Darley, with the Cavies.
