Born in Rock Springs, Wyoming–the home of 56 nationalities–it is no wonder Pembroke ended up so creatively diverse. Her fascination with the notions of good and evil, demons and angels, and how the lines blur have inspired her writing. Wucaii Almost Didn’t Get Written

I started writing Wucaii when I was in high school. It was a much different version than what it eventually turned in to, but I always knew I would have a human-dragon hybrid in it.

I didn’t finish the book when I was younger, so I took it with me to college. When I was a grad student, I took a workshop and decided that I would work on this story. It wasn’t called Wucaii back then. It didn’t have a title yet, and it was still closer to the version I started in high school rather than the final version.

During the course of the workshop, my confidence with the story was shaken to the core. I remember distinctly in one class that one of my fellow students told me he didn’t finish reading my chapter because I referred to beer as “ale,” and he hates that. He also thought it was weird I would call them “pants” instead of some other archaic term since it was a fantasy story. (I’m not even sure what that would be. Breeches? Trousers? Britches? He didn’t have a suggestion either.)

The way the story was structured at the time, there was going to be a huge battle between the humans and the dragons, and the professor told me that she didn’t think I’d be able to pull it off. She didn’t have the confidence in my writing ability to write that scene, and it was an important scene, so the entire story would be ruined if I didn’t do it correctly. As you can imagine, after hearing that, I didn’t think I could write the scene either, so I gave up on the book. I put it away with no intentions of ever completing the project.

Years later, after I’d regained some confidence and felt better about my writing abilities, I decided to tackle Wucaii once again. I attempted to finish it the way I started it, but it wasn’t working. I scrapped the entire draft and started over. The new version worked better, and I was able to finish the story and be happy with the final product.

To this day, Wucaii is one of my favorite stories. I had so much fun creating Aelana and the Queen Dragon and developing their relationship. It was also challenging and intriguing to create a magic system and develop my bad guy. It may have taken me a long time to write the book, but it was worth it in the end. And to think: Wucaii almost didn’t get written.

In addition to the main giveaway, I’m also having a giveaway on my blog (http://pembrokesinclair.blogspot.com/). For a chance to win an ecopy of Wucaii, comment on the Scavenger Hunt post and let me know what/who is your favorite dragon (can be from movies and/or books). Don’t forget to leave your email! Winner will be notified on July 1, 2018.

Before you go! To enter the grand prize giveaway, you need to know that MY lucky book number is 8.

Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on TEAM PURPLE and you’ll have the secret code to enter for the grand prize!

Wait! There’s more! Enter to win swag from both the DESCENDANTS OF ISIS series and DEATH ISLAND: Click here to enter (Rafflecopter).
